NeighborSpace is grateful to owner Bill Kuhl (seated in the golf cart) for his foresight in protecting this property for future generations.
On July 30, friends and neighbors of Bill Kuhl gathered with NeighborSpace staff and board members to celebrate the signing of a deed of conservation easement.
The 9-acre property is located at 9000 Satyr Hill Rd in Parkville and features forest, lawn, and a long-time holly nursery. McLean Nurseries has been owned and operated by Bill Kuhl since the 1970s, and has become a much-loved hub for neighbors and a well-respected resource for gardeners. Neighbors stop by regularly to walk their dogs or to chat with Bill, and gardeners know to visit when they are looking for a specific holly species or need advice. Bill generously shares the space with friends who propagate vegetables in the hoop houses or tend to beehives in the former orchard. The nursery hosts annual meetings of the Daylily Society and welcomes other horticultural groups.
Somewhat counterintuitively, I’ve been told that the nursery really comes alive in the winter. Each year, a small but skilled team makes hundreds of fresh wreaths and Christmas pieces using cuttings from the many different holly trees on the property. NeighborSpace will share information this winter on when to stop by and purchase decorations of your own!
The Free State Daylily Society held its annual Sale and Auction at the Nursery on August 1st.
The McLean Nurseries property addresses several of NeighborSpace’s conservation goals. Environmentally, the protection of 9 acres of green space in a heavily developed area conserves vital habitat for small mammals, birds and pollinators. The property contains 4.5 acres of forest and is contiguous with hundreds of acres of green space in the Gunpowder watershed, including Cromwell Valley Park and Loch Raven Reservoir. It also absorbs and filters stormwater runoff before it runs into feeder streams to Minebank Run. Since the property is open to the public and Bill encourages neighbors to visit, it also addresses the deficit of open space in this area of urban Baltimore County. McLean Nurseries provides access to green space within a 10-minute walk for 1,900 residents.
NeighborSpace is excited for the opportunities that this new conservation easement provides and we look forward to hosting events at the nursery soon. Stay tuned!
